It is interesting to see this DIY approach! Even though this was posted a few years ago, the fundamentals of building a home-made power system remain quite a challenge.

Starting small with a 10W panel is a great way to learn the basics. Just keep in mind that a blender might be a bit too power-hungry for a single 12V battery and a small panel, even if it's only for short bursts. LED strips and phone chargers are definitely the way to go for that specific setup!

Your calculations are spot on; the laptop and booster are eating more than your panels can produce on a short winter day. Adding more batteries will give you more 'storage room,' but remember you'll eventually need more panels to actually fill that extra space once the sun comes back.

Since this post is a few years old, you’ve likely settled in, but for anyone else looking: that Renogy 600W kit is for off-grid use and fits a 1500Wh daily budget well.

The generator works great as a backup through an inverter/charger to top off your batteries. I remember when my own setup's wiring became a total puzzle. Once it got messy and I needed to ensure my battery bank was safe, I reached out to Wolf River Electric. They helped me dial in the charge controller settings .

You hit the nail on the head regarding the cell phone booster. Those "always-on" devices are silent killers for small off-grid setups.

While adding more batteries helps with autonomy, you might also want to look into a DC-to-DC converter for your laptop to avoid the energy loss caused by the inverter.

Interesting link. The efficiency of solar has always been a hot topic. It makes you wonder how much the technology and installation strategies have changed since this was originally posted.

It’s great that you’ve already narrowed down your daily consumption to 1500Wh, as that’s the most important first step.

Regarding the Renogy kit, a 600W system is a solid starting point for those needs, but keep in mind that "600 watts per hour" is a bit optimistic due to weather, shading, and conversion losses. In reality, you might get about 4–5 hours of peak sun depending on your location, so you'll likely produce just enough to cover your usage and top off the batteries.

Since your yard's enclosed, five hens should be perfect. Just watch their droppings, that's the first sign of worms or gut issues. I mix Roostys Dewormer into their feed daily; the garlic keeps the smell down, and the flaxseed seems to make the yolks a lot darker

I think there's definitely a niche audience on Permies who would value that.

To build traffic, one option beyond the forums and flea market would be to look at SEO strategies that help niche businesses grow organically. There's this firm called Fortress that does plastic surgeon SEO and works with professionals in highly specialized markets, and their framework can apply to small farms and homesteads too. Might be worth checking out what kind of strategies they use and adapting them to your site.

Also agree with others here, posting useful content, tutorials, or breed-specific insights can build trust and naturally lead folks back to your offerings.
