Biography
I am a twentysomething painter and tinkerer who has a penchant for good home cooking, gardening, and RRR (reduce, reuse, recycle.) I grew up in an exurb of the Inland Empire of Southern California and all throughout my childhood witnessed the repercussions of mismanaged water, the agricultural practices of the San Joaquin Valley, and the decommissioning of thousands of citrus acreage (including those right outside my doorstep.) I owe my love of the natural world to the Manzanita tree, who lead me in increasingly thick stands to the untouched grottos and hills where I witnessed how nature prevails against all odds. I now live far from home but still carry in my heart the quiet and brutal wisdom of the arid chaparral.
Skills or things I just do for the sake of doing:
-Mend mine and my fiancé's clothing, and alter thrift finds too
-Brew my own mead/melomels (sometimes it even tastes good!)
-Grow my own herbs
-Find funky ways to use kitchen scraps
-Honing my foraging and wildcrafting
-Slingin' my good old vinegar cleaner
-Crafting my own air freshener
-Rendering my own tallow for cooking, salves, and candles (eventually soap!)
-Dreaming of a simple, clean life with Mother Nature by my side

For this BB I washed my rayon bed set (King top sheet, King fitted sheet, two standard pillow cases), which were extremely heavy once wet and surprised me at how difficult it was to agitate them properly. Nothing a little stomping could not accomplish. Nonetheless, it was rewarding and the bed set turned out softer and more buttery than ever.

I have decided from here on out to hand wash my clothes, and will be hunting for a wringer in the coming days. Who knows, maybe I'll switch to soap nuts too after this dumb VOC-riddled pod wash BS runs out.

The bed set has not been shown folded because I immediately put it back onto my bed once dry. Respectfully, I do not want to show a bunch of strangers my bed. Yet. I hope whoever rates this BB understands.

For this BB I decided to grow quinoa sprouts and lentil shoots, because it is what I had on hand, and my trays are the drainage trays I used from old plastic planters I've had for at least two years. The medium is reused soil that I sanitized in my crock pot at the beginning of the year, effectively neutralizing any nasties that could have grown in them from last year's outdoor growing project (which ended horribly in a fungus gnat extravaganza, but you gotta take your lessens standing up, eh?) So far, the sterilization has proven effective.

After completing this I decided to use some other drainage trays to sprout chia, arugula, peas, spinach, and even bunching onion. All from existing seeds and materials that I had in my apartment. Fresh nutritious sprouts at basically no cost to me or my little family! Those are not pictured here, but I am too excited not to share the news. The concept of possibly doubling the nutrient content of some of these seeds just by sprouting them and making them more bioavailable is... well, it's the bees knees to me.

For this BB, Sew a Button, I elected my partner's most recent hand-me-down. It is a thick and very sturdy old flannel and will last a lifetime if we give it the TLC it deserves.

I chose a button from my newly procured button jar (which, by the way, filled up fast when I started paying attention to random buttons lying around. Go figure.) Bada bing bada boom, new button! I also filmed a video demonstrating how to quickly tie a knot on the loose end of a thread, but it seems I can't upload it. That's okay. I'll keep my secrets.

Hi everyone!

My fiancé (u/Jack Sato) and I are starting SKIP and want some clarification on how to format our submissions in regards to completing PEA and PEP. We are planning to mostly complete projects together, as we typically function as a unit and will be using this process to not only bond but work on our interpersonal work ethic in preparation for the permaculture lifestyle. Which leads me to my question:

Can Badges be earned by a couple, or only on an individual basis? If they are earned on an individual basis, and therefore through the respective submissions, will our submissions be rejected if they contain the same photos/projects?

We are eager to start SKIP and found that a lot of BB's are things we already do daily. Thank you for kindly considering this question!

EDIT: Answered! Thank you for taking the time to explain. The stew analogy and university analogy make a lot of sense and we will adjust accordingly.
I feel you! Nothing wrong with super patched up garb, although here's some solutions I often use when clothing has totally flown the coop.

For knits of all types, unravel the yarn and:
- Knit a new item (depending on skein size you end up with!)
- Use it for all purpose string
- Wax the yarn if it's thin to prevent rot for outdoor or semi-outdoor use
- Thin 100% cotton yarn can be braided and treated in borax + salt solution for wicks

For woven items, I've found less use:
- Cut into rags
- Cut into patches for other cloth items, clothing or otherwise
