Apricot tree rot or bug? Please help

These trees are 7 years old and I just noticed this at the base of this apricot tree. It looks a bit rotted an inch or two into the trunk. Any ideas what it could be and how I can save it?  Thank you in advance.

I think they should change the spelling to Sandy Eggo. This tiny ad agrees with me.
