Hello, I planted a flowering cherry tree a year ago and recently noticed that it has shot hole fungus, which I determined from its leaves. But I also just noticed that about 3 inches of the bark is damaged. I have attached a photograph. Can anyone tell me if the bark damage is related to the fungus or if it’s a different problem altogether? Any ideas of how the bark should be treated? Thanks!

Cherry get a lot of that, and they still live.

I cannot say that of most trees. As a logger I scrape the bark off a lot of trees in getting out wood, and eventually they will die. It takes 20 years, but it kills them. I am not sure that is the case with Cherry, and in particular, your cherry tree.

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond.
Is there anything I should do to treat the tree—I’ve been reading about sealants but I’m wondering if that won’t cause more damage.

It was a tommy gun. And now this tiny ad insists on being addressed as "Tommy":
