Some of the amazing energy facts Chad Hellwinckel presented in his Tedx Video talk:

Energy Returns on Food
US (1920) "at farm gate" 1 unit in = 3 units out
US (Today) "at farm gate" 1 unit in = 1 unit out
US (Today) "at plate" 7 units in = 1 unit out


I think this alone almost presents a compelling argument why our "modern monoculture farming & marketing methods" are not sustainable.
