Aloha! We recently purchased a beautiful plot of land on Maui and are in the process of clearing out all the invasive plants/trees in the jungle section of the property. We have two beautiful banyan trees that create a heavy shaded area and now that we have most of the invasive trees removed, we'd like to start planting trees/plants, ideally edible. Has anyone had success growing under a banyan? I would love to hear suggestions on what would grow well  I'm worried that the banyans will just take over anything we plant. We are in zone 12a, lots of winter rain, 500ft elevation.
Also, the invasive trees we are clearing grow very well and fast, mainly strawberry guava and Brazilian pepper tree (Christmas berry).
Thanks in advance!!
Nicole
