Horizontal Hives in Northern Canada (Zone 2)

We have been keeping bees in a zone 2 area of Canada and are interested in horizontal hives.  Does anyone have experience using these type of hives this far north?  Some other local beekeepers say they are "coffins" and don't work here.
 
I remember before the flying monkeys became such an invasive species. We had tiny ads then.
