What's inside the 2nd generation Liberator Rocket Heater from rocketheater.com? A heat riser and burn chamber lined with replaceable ceramic boards for starters.

UPDATE: The Gen 1 Liberator from rocketheater.com works really well on wood scraps or pellets and the Gen 2 does even better. At 20 degrees F outside one 40lb bag of pellets gives us around 18 hours of heat for our poorly insulated 2000 square ft trailer home.

I bought a gen 1 liberator a year ago. The claim that it will burn for 8 hours on 40 pounds of pellets is false. 3 hours max. As far as burning sticks and scraps, good luck with that. When you try with the included burn grate it will not self feed and requires constant attention as the housing for the burn grate is smaller than the size of the feed tube. When you try without the burn grate the burn tube fills with hot coals and clogs up, at that point the fire goes up the feed tube and the exhaust and smoke goes into your house.

Anyone have a response to Ted above who claims that solid fuels will clog up the liberator? Does it need constant attention in order to work and not smoke out a house? Thanks.

Ted, that sounds like a real bummer. I ran my Liberator Gen 1 for 3 years alternating both pellets and wood with no such problems before selling it when I got a Gen 2 to test.  The Liberator uses natural draft so the rate of pellet consumption really depends on the amount of draft the chimney is producing. A tall insulated chimney might need to be damped down to keep it from burning hot and overheating the room while burning through your pellets really quickly and sucking the warm air out of the room in the process. One of my clients had exactly that problem with his 45 foot tall chimney (3 storey house with two layer walk out basement). He had three dampers in installed in a row to slow the draft down to his satisfaction. I have had 40lb bags last over 28 hours but with the draft really low so the heater wasn't producing very much heat. I have also run through a bag in 12 hours on a chimney with a stronger draft. Liberator recommends a 25 foot tall chimney.
