Hello all, how do I figure out what is the best cover crop? (I am in upstate NY, zone 5b, Finger Lakes) Best book? Website? How do I learn how/when to cut it? Etc, etc ??
For my garden here in eastern Colorado zone 5 I use a few different things with the easiest being winter peas. Plus the greens and peas are edibile. The plants are easy to remove when the time comes. The various grasses I try to grow in narrow strips to making them easier to remove which I usually do with a spade about 3 or weeks before planting out transplants. The narrow strips also frequently include hairy vetch and winter peas. Around the narrow strips I usually fill in with mulched fall leaves/grass.
