I found  this site in my search to try and achieve a workable goal, I have been told by some not worth the effort but for me it is a pet project with a positive outcome.
I have 3 ponds linked with a gravity fed filter system. I have a circulation of 15000lph. 2 of the ponds are connected by a water spill, its about 6" wide and drops about 6" into the next pond. This is where I monitor my circulation using a 20L bucket and multiplying.
I want to power LED pond lights and maybe a small pump. These would all be on a dusk sensor and set to run for a few hours, not all night.
The flow is constant, I can narrow the width but I can't  change the height.
My idea was to get a mate to build me an 8" stainless steel wheel which on a shaft would turn some sort of generator, charging  a leisure battery via a regulator which my lights and sensor would plug into. My problem lies when I try and communicate this to a retailer and he looks at me like a clueless idiot. I know in my head what I need but communicating in the correct terminology ....
So am I being daft?
Can 15000lph generate enough juice, pond lights use 1.3w and I want 8
