I'm in USDA 7b/8a and myoga has been on my wish list for a long time. For me, that was partly because I want "all the plants," but mostly because I was looking for a zone-appropriate substitute for ginger (Zingiber officinale) which I didn't think we could grow here.
However, in the meantime, I planted a small hand of ginger from the grocery store one year. It grew! I dug it up before our first frost - it was roughly the same as what I planted. I stored the rhizome inside all winter in a very dry box of
wood shavings, and replanted in spring. It grew again, and very well! A cool plant with a tropical vibe, a ginger smell, and a good conversation piece. I had low expectations when I dug it up again that fall. I was shocked to find the rhizome had almost tripled in size! We took a little for the kitchen, stored the rest in wood shavings, and just planted out this spring for attempt number 3. If this trend keeps up, I have my ginger needs covered.
Sharing in case you're in a similar situation :)
I still want some myoga though...
