I put in an earthen floor in my guest house ten years ago. I sealed it with boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. After five years it was still sticky so I sanded it off and bought fresh boiled linseed oil and put on very thin coats. It is still sticky and dirt embeds into it and throw rugs get stuck. I am hesitant to do the same thing and expect different results. What am I doing wrong?

I'm just guessing, but could the mineral spirits be at fault? I often thin boiled linseed oil with turpentine or mineral spirits when I'm oiling tool handles, but I wipe off the excess. The solvent may be preventing polymerisation and keeping it liquid.

If you can, try a test patch. Remove what you can of the old sticky coating and refinish with just the oil. Rub or buff with cloth or a wool pad and try to get it to heat up a bit as you're rubbing.
