I haven’t looked at the video yet, but for me, the best mulch is the one I can get abundantly, in a timely fashion, and free (not truly free because I need a pick up truck, my labor and time, and a lawnmower)). As a result, my two top mulches are grass clippings and the mulch that my county makes out of organic waste (mostly palm tree trimmings). Number three on my list is macadamia nut processing waste, but the processors often sell it at a cost too high for me to want to pay. But when their yards get full, they will start giving it away in order to get rid of the stuff. That’s when I show up to load my truck.
This is just the way I do it. I cannot bring myself to buy mulch. Did it once in my 22 years here, and I still regret having given that hard earned money to someone else. Call me cheap, or call me frugal.
It's never too late to start! I retired to homestead on the slopes of Mauna Loa, an active volcano. I relate snippets of my endeavor on my blog : www.kaufarmer.blogspot.com
