Hey farmer fam! 👋

Let me tell you a hard truth I had to learn the hard way…

I was raising birds, selling birds—but making little to nothing in profit.
Why? My feed cost was quietly sucking the life out of my wallet like a vampire in the dark. 😫

It got to a point where I asked myself: “Am I farming chickens… or just feeding them for fun?”

So I did something about it. I made 7 practical changes to cut my feed cost—without sacrificing bird growth.
And guess what? My profit per bird shot up. I'm talking real profit. Let me walk you through exactly what I did.

✅ 1. I Started Mixing My Own Feed (And Took Back Control)

For years, I depended on commercial feeds. I thought it was “safe.” But I was bleeding money and didn’t even know it.

So I sat down, read up, talked to other farmers, and started mixing my own feed. Here’s what I use:

  • []Maize or guinea corn: Energy base
[]Soybean meal or groundnut cake: Protein source
[]Wheat offal or rice bran: Cheap filler with some nutrients
[]Bone meal/fish meal: For calcium and extra protein
[*]Premix, salt, garlic, ginger: For health and flavor (yep, chickens like taste too)

  • Result? Lower cost. Faster growth. No regrets. It gave me full control over what my birds were eating and how much I was spending.

💡 Pro tip: Guinea corn is cheaper in dry season—buy it in bulk then!

✅ 2. I Turned Waste Into Feed Gold

At first, I was throwing away kitchen and farm scraps. Big mistake!

Now, I dry, crush, or chop up things like:

  • []Cassava peels (sun-dried)
    []Vegetable scraps
    []Moringa leaves
    []Leftover rice or soaked grains

  • And I mix them with the feed or serve them as snacks. My birds LOVE it, and it stretches the main feed.

Plus, moringa? It’s a superfood. Helps with weight gain, immunity, and even egg quality.

    ✅ 3. I Let Them Free-Range a Bit Every Day

Noilers are tough birds. They can hustle for their own food! So I let them out for 2–4 hours daily.

    They eat:

  • []Grass
    []Termites
    []Small insects
    []Seeds and grains

  • That’s feed I don’t have to buy! And guess what? Their meat got firmer, their legs stronger, and people started paying MORE because the birds looked more “natural.”

📌 Tip: Fence a section with shade and water so they don’t wander too far.

✅ 4. I Boosted Their Gut Health With Local Herbs

Instead of buying expensive antibiotics or boosters all the time, I tried what our grandmas used:

  • []Garlic & Ginger: Crushed and mixed into feed or water
[]Pawpaw leaf tea: Helps with digestion and worms
    []Bitter leaf water: Immune booster
    []Moringa powder: Growth promoter

  • This made a huge difference. My birds were eating better, growing better, and falling sick less often. Feed was no longer being wasted on sick, slow-growing birds.

✅ 5. I Joined a Feed Buyers Group and Bought in Bulk

Let me keep it real: buying small quantities of feed weekly is a trap.

I teamed up with a few farmer friends and we now buy:

  • []Maize
    []Soybean meal
    []Wheat offal
    []Premix

  • …in 50kg and 100kg bags directly from processors or wholesalers. We split the cost and save big on transport and market markup.

And when prices go up? We just smile—because we already stocked up.

✅ 6. I Watched My Feed Conversion Like a Hawk

You can’t improve what you don’t measure. So, I began tracking:

  • []How many kg of feed they eat
[]How much weight they gain weekly
    [*]Which batch grows faster

  • That helped me spot which feed mix was working best—and when to slow down feeding and prep for sale.
No more wasting feed when they’ve already peaked.

✅ 7. I Stopped Feed Waste with Smarter Feeders

Honestly, this one surprised me the most. I used to feed birds from old basins and flat dishes.

Big mistake! They kicked feed out with their feet, beaks, even wings! 😩

    So I upgraded to:

  • []Deep plastic feeders with curved lips
    []Hanging feeders to reduce spills
[*]DIY PVC pipe feeders (cheap but effective!)

  • It cut my waste by up to 25%! That’s like getting one extra bag of feed for free every month.
