I have a friend who home brews quite a bit and her
compost pile is getting out of control with spent barley. We have chickens, and know that barley has protein, so the last time we were there we took home a
bucket full. Our chickens love it, and we have given them a small scoop-full as a treat along with their commercial
feed and our kitchen scraps. My friend is hoping to make this a more permanent arrangement with us taking her spent barley, because she goes through so much. I read a few articles on making our own
chicken feed and they all contain raw ingredients. I'm wondering if this roasted, soaked (read: wet) barley is something that can be made into
chicken feed. We have a smallish
yard (about 1/5
acre including our home) so growing a lot of other types of feed to go with this is not an option, though we'd consider buying other things to mix with it. Thoughts?
