We are looking for help as we begin implementing
permaculture designs inside and outside of our historic brownstone building in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The home, built in 1868, has recently been renovated according to Passive House standards. We aim for a low ecological
footprint both the construction of our projects, and our daily conduct. Whenever possible, we make use of salvaged and recycled materials, and other ecological alternatives.
Upcoming projects include creating a rainwater harvesting system, composting, building gardens in front and side yards, as well as the rooftops. We look for responsible and mature helpers, who have a mind for environmentalism and
sustainability. This would be ideal for somebody with a strong interested in
permaculture or green building, specifically in its urban application. Having taken a
permaculture design certification course is helpful, but not required.
We also welcome skilled tradespeople with
experience in construction related fields. Regardless of the type of experience you bring, workers need to be self motivated and be able to work without supervision at times. We ask for workers to stay a minimum of 4 weeks.
The building is lived in by two permanent residents, and two studio rooms are regularly rented to travelers. Along with the
permaculture projects, workers are also assigned basic housekeeping and general communications with the guests.
We offer free accommodation in exchange for 24 hours of work per week.
This is a great opportunity for anybody looking to explore NYC and/or urban sustainability. Public transit is very easily accessible. The surrounding area holds opportunities for all interests.
