Hi Permies,
First post long time long time lurker.
I was hoping for some guidance from you straw balers, I'm trying to get this project off the ground and need some help fleshing it out for the permit. I was hoping to self build this with the help of some friends. It's essentially 100 feet by 40 feet wide for the main building, and the building can't exceed 12.5 feet since it's a secondary building on my property.
I wanted to incorporate off the grid tech for water and electricity, while making one corner of the building super insulated to work off of passive house standards and so that the heating costs would be negligible. I was going to get engineered parallel trusses for the roof not sure if I can insulate them with straw bales up there since I'm not sure what the load per bale would be. It's a pole barn type building, was hoping to use sliding door glass to glaze the sound size, and splurge on the triple panes for the insulated dividing section where all the utilities would be. I was hoping to collect rain water off the roof and have it cylce through a greenhouse/solarium in the front of the building to extend the growing season and to make a natural pool to filter the water and for something to do since we're out in the country.
I guess my questions would be is this feasible build? Would the foundation be a 4 foot gravel trench with 4 inch slab, not sure how wide, with a wood sill plate for the bales? The bales would be really infill for the posts and won't carry any load. I was hoping to earthen plaster it.

I could use any help you can offer. As much as I'd love to hire an architect who's familiar with these styles of building my building budget isn't that high.

Thank you for any input.

This looks really impressive. I'm not an expert on this but very interested to follow any advice 'in the know' people can give you. I'm also looking into building a small house using bales for insulation. Good luck with your build.

I'l try and help. First off did you size the concrete piers and poles to take your live and dead loads properly? Second, not sure what you mean by super insulation one corner? Are you planing on insulating and air sealing the entire envelop with bales and let the poles in? Are you planning a vented attic or sealed? What software are you using and how do you like it?
