Recommendations for an LDG on our homestead?

We're interested in getting a dog this year, that will protect our future flock of chickens, ducks and turkeys, and in the future, sheep. We live in Northern VT, so we would like a cold hardy breed. Any recommendations?

Hi neighbor. I'm in central Vermont & I'm keen on the big white dogs: Maremmas, & Pyrs. I also have a Pyr X Kuvatz.

I recommend getting 2. They need good fencing. Be prepared for barking at night. A new puppy will generally kill a chicken by accident till it learns it's strength. They do not eat any more then any other type of dog - even my pyr/kuvatz who is 137 lbs. My Australian Shepherd will easily eat more then the LGDs because they lay around all day & he doesn't.
