I was informed by the previouse owner of this property that she had tried on multiple occasions to grow mellons / squash to no good result. So I made up some round wire "bins" -- 3 ft hi X 4 ft across.
Stuffed these full of spring lawn cleanup -- say 10% green grass - 10 % pine needles - and the rest poplar leaves that I neglected to remove from the lawns last fall. That was two weeks ago and they have started to compost [cook] nicely. SO today I had the brileant idea to make a "hole" in the center and fill it with soil from my "spare" dirt pile. I'll give these bins a week or so to re-establish and then put in some patty pan squash seeds for a test. I'm guessing that they should grow like a Hot Darn --- hot being the key word. PS I'm in zone 2 so the nights here still go below 0 C.
