This place is just off the highway that leads to the west coast of the island.

The moist valley is perfect for moss.

This maple finds the light by reaching out over the river. It's dry on the surface right now, but it will run up to 150 feet wide when the rainy season arrives.

Some of the cleanest gravel in the world is found in river washes. It is a different shape every spring. Alders colonize any substrate that provides footing.

Gnarly stumps are debarked and polished by the river.

Several big logs blocked the way.

This alder is down but not out. It has sprouted new trunks from the old one.
