Wow your sister was trying to garden in africa! SHe couldnt grow anything but the mozambiques did grow things interesting.
I see Africa as a place where though it is hot the soils have not been ruined, the influence that ran East West, from China who invented the plough to England and back, arab countries in the middle, Influence that bought the plough and influence that did not go down Africa till the explores got down there and missionaries. I think the earth was good in africa it seems they have more hot country trees in the sudan than in arabia for instance judge from th efotos that come out of sudan.the earth was also good in the southern states before they ploughed it. They got those frightening black dust storms in the era of the dust bowl which i suppose were due to humus which is a fine black dust if dry, that could have been present in big quantities in soil that had never been ploughed and so the finer particles had never been blown away before. Wind erosion takes away the the lighter particles like vegetable matter and the finer ones like clay which are useful in soils and leaves the sands of Arabia.
Wangari Mattai the nobel prize for planting trees in Kenya says that the British spoilt Kenyan soils and bared Kenya of trees.
Her mother told her that when a leopard was by the path somthing you know because they leave their tails on the path you say, i have the same name as you, which she does and and walk quietly round them, so there was a sensible behavior with lepords culture then which she says no longer exists, people get a attack of hysterics nowdays when they find leopards.
I had not thought of snakes before, that would be scarey, black mumbas! Put anyone off market gardening. It is interesting the problems that exist in other countries, i had not thought of that one before, cuttign down the vegetable matter for fear of snakes , you could get desertification for fear of snakes. There is also an bug that gets under your skin if you don't keep grass short in Africa, i heard somewhere.
It just goes to show that you have to know places to talk about agriculture in them.
Its a pity your sister did not stay longer to find out more,to find out how they grew their food .
The shepherds here say their dogs tell them when there is a snake, the dogs are also responsible for doing for snakes. The small rat catchers type dog like mine.
Banging the ground or walking heavily is meant to get them moving away before you get there as they dont like humans, to let them know you are there, this is another technique for dealing with snakes. agri rose macaskie
