I see this as a very multi-dimensional quote which has many shades of meaning when it comes to permaculture. He probably wasn't thinking of permaculture when he said that, but lucky us.

Edges are where the magic happens, we are a fringe of society movement, we don't need 1000 acre corn fields to feed people... what do you guys think?

I've seen this attributed to Jim Whittaker; regardless of attribution, it's a good line.

Formidable Vegetable Soundsystem paraphrases the line in their song "The Edge Is Where It's At", which is about the many ways to interpret the permaculture principle of edges.
