Basins of Relations: Thinking like a Watershed

Brock Dolman offers a series of slide images and interpretation about water, watersheds, human development patterns and restoration ideas that support regenerative ecological integrity and instream flows for salmonids.Brock will discuss rainwater harvesting from roofs to the broader landscape as a strategy of water conservation.  He will expand on ideas of “Conservation Hydrology” and Low Impact Development, which emphasize the need for human development designs to move from drainage to “retain-age.”  Moving away from run-off to run-on type land uses can result in multiple watershed benefits such as, enhanced late season baseflows, reduced flooding, improved water quality, increased groundwater recharge for local supply, benefits to stream structure and function, enhanced instream and upland wildlife habitat, short term and long term economic benefits and improved localized aesthetics.

Brock Dolman is a co-founder and co-owner of Occidental Arts and Ecology Center and the Sowing Circle Intentional Community. He is the Director of OAEC's WATER Institute and Permaculture Program.  Since 1995, under Brock’s direction, the OAEC Permaculture Program has become nationally recognized as a leading permaculture education and innovative demonstration center.  Brock has presented at numerous conferences such as Bioneers, EcoFarm, GreenPrints, HOPES and SolFest. He also has lectured internationally in Costa Rica, Brazil and China.
