How To Read the Landscape and Design Successful Water Harvesting and Land Restoration Projects

Join us at the Heartwood Institute to increase your working knowledge and understanding of the complex and dynamic natural processes that shape landscapes and ecosystems. Use that information to develop a holistic design approach to water harvesting, erosion control and land restoration projects.

The course is designed for landowners and land managers, as well as water harvesting practitioners, farmers, ranchers, restorationists and advanced students of permaculture. It emphasizes working with, rather than against, nature and will establish the foundational knowledge needed to recognize the symptoms and causes of land degradation. Build on your landscape reading skills and learn to recognize subtle forms of degradation before it becomes severe. Deepen your design and assessment skills by participating in the initial stages of project development under the direction of a master builder.

This course will expand your water harvesting and land restoration toolbox and help you ask the right questions to create site-specific solutions. We will challenge your assumptions of what make something regenerative and will teach you the steps required to design projects that are truly resilient and restore abundance to the land.

Course topics will include:

Understanding watershed patterns and processes

-Watershed hydrology
-Sources and sinks of runoff in the landscape
-Erosion processes caused by runoff
-Gully formation and channel incision
-The erosion and deposition balance
-Reading the landscape to make informed decisions

Landscape assessment framework
-Recognizing the symptoms and causes of degradation
-Identifying regenerative processes
-Understanding land management influences

How to heal degraded land by harvesting runoff
-Regenerative design principles
-Controlling erosion with natural processes and materials
-Water harvesting earthworks
