Making an elevational earth-sheltered home out of existing ruins?

Helpful comments and links to tutorials would be most appreciated! I'm considering building an earth-sheltered home by myself, using the (plentiful) local rocks and the abandoned foundations of an early 20th century house.  Above the house, the ground is extremely steep; it's forested, but a slippery climb.
