I remember people burning their lawns every spring before it grows is this good? also if you have a big dead spot does it hurt to burn it?

I think it is not good. It can lead to soil erosion.

I would suggest a thatching rake rather than burning the dead grass. You could possibly damage the grass plants themselves.

I did it and it worked but be real careful not to overburn just get the dead stuff on top
