About the Company:

Avena Botanicals is a small business in midcoast Maine where each person working within its rhythm plays an integral role in the co-creation process of providing high quality handmade herbal products from seed to bottle. We are an herbal apothecary that has offered a variety of hand-crafted herbal remedies for 32 years and most of our products are made with herbs grown and hand-harvested from our own biodynamic, organic gardens in Rockport, Maine. In providing high quality herbal remedies created by hand, we work to balance strong ideals about the creation of these remedies with good business practice. We strive to create a happy, healthy workplace for all beings.

Position Summary:

The Seasonal Medicinal Herb Gardener is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of Avena Botanicals' biodynamic production garden and helping to meet herb harvest goals. This gardener position requires a minimum of 3 years organic gardening skills and familiarity with a variety of gardening activities including bed preparation, weeding, composting, mulching, transplanting, watering, and thoughtfully and respectfully harvesting herbs. The role also involves communicating clearly and compassionately with co-workers and garden visitors. A strong interest in medicinal herbs and biodynamic gardening practices is encouraged.

Daily tasks include: preparing and maintaining garden beds and greenhouse plants, participating in biodynamic preparation applications, collecting seeds, collecting harvests from the garden and checking them into production, drying plant material in the drying room, logging garden and drying room activities, maintaining the integrity of harvest quality by following standard operating procedures for all fresh and dried plants, maintaining drying room sanitation, tool maintenance, fence repair, pest management, and other garden tasks as needed. This position requires the skills, care, and aesthetic of performing garden work as well as the ability to communicate with clarity and thoughtfulness when participating in group projects as well as solo projects. When needed, this position will also assist in the maintenance of the Sanctuary gardens.

Schedule:

36 hours per week
Starts late April and lasts through early November, weather permitting
