We are looking for a dedicated individual or couple interested in overseeing a barn building project in exchange for a serene homestead-based residence in a rural island community. Our ten acre homestead is located on a small island in the Salish Sea of Washington State, with easy access to the nearby Victorian seaport of Port Townsend and the growing Chimacum Valley farming community. We have a small orchard for fruit, and grow produce for our table. Heritage chickens provide eggs, as well as chicks that we market through a local, sustainable poultry breeders collaborative.

You would manage the project with oversight from the experienced owner/builder.  Basic building experience is the minimum required, as well as the ability to physically handle the challenge of building a 36x24 foot barn. While you may not have managed a full building project yourself, you are a self-starter with excellent organizational skills who will have the aptitude to take on the project management tasks necessary for accomplishing the building and finishing.

There are two residences on the property. We live in one. The other is a light and airy Craftsman built 1060 sq ft of open living/studio space, all furnished. Large south-facing windows look out over trees, pond and pasture. Fully equipped kitchen. Office with built-in wraparound desk. Cozy bedroom/sleeping alcove with queen size bed. Private entrance and parking area. Elevated east-facing deck overlooking orchard and ponds.  Wood stove, as well as electric heat. Includes a private laundry, full bathroom with Japanese soaking tub and cedar-lined sauna.

If interested, take a look at a few more details and photos here:

To find out more about this opportunity, please send us an introductory email at marrowstoneretreat@gmail.com. Tell us a bit about you and your experience and we will provide more information about the exchange. We will also be happy to provide references as to our integrity, and hope you would be able to do the same. This would be the perfect opportunity for someone interested in developing their project management resume, as well as sampling life in this popular and rapidly growing rural community in the Puget Sound region.
