the non-irrigated tomatoes video

I watched the vid of the tomatoes that had only .22in of rain most of the summer and no outside irrigation, but b/c of background noise had a hard time hearing the explanation of how the bed was created that the tomatoes were on.

Layering compost with something else? And how many layers? Would it work with clay soils? TIA.

I believe that the lady in blue was saying alternating layers of sod and compost.
