I've grown the giant bird of paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) from seed. I just sowed them in ordinary germinating media and after a while they germinated. I don't remember the details, but there was nothing special about it. I've heard these are trickier than the more common Stelitzia reginae, so perhaps anything you read about difficulty might be overstated. Incidentally I just sowed seed which I collected from the resulting plants yesterday!
