Good morning all,

We just found out that we got in the last year of the shelterbelt tree program here in Alberta. We are going to have 1900+ trees and bushes to plant come May.

I was wondering if anyone had any good materials or sources of information I could look into to get the best planting plan that I can.

I have looked into many things but I find most people do a very basic covering of how to plant a single or a couple trees, not many resources that I have found deal with larger numbers and shelterbelts.

Thank you

Oh wow that sounds great Trevor, I hope you are enjoying Lloydminster, the weather change from Vic is quite drastic.

I took a workshop with Curtis and have some friends doing spin gardening in Calgary. We are still trying to get organized with the composting especially since Calgary just slowed down there composting collection solution by another year or two . I mean that is good for us to create a business but bad for all the compostable materials that are going to keep going to landfill.

Good day all,

My dad was given a bunch of 250 Gallon totes that stored http://lubricants.petro-canada.ca/en/products/313.aspx in them and I am wondering if there is any possible way to do bioremediation on these enough that they would serve a purpose for something positive. Now no I would never put drinking water in them and no I am not too cheap to buy food grade ones, I simply hate to see them go to waste and in the very least would use the cage structure in for something. So I am wondering if anyone on here knows of an earth friendly way to work with them. I have heard some talk of mushrooms working with petroleum for clean up or would bio fuel work for storing in them. They are your basic plastic 4' by 4' by 4'. Any thoughts of a purpose they could hold?

Good day all,

We are rejuvenating the farm and part of that involves bringing a small herd of cows back for rotational grazing. We have the water figured out in the pasture but for wintering the cows we need to figure out a good solution. The electricity to the far barns had been taken down some years ago and the well in that corner has not been used for some time. We are thinking rather than run power all the way over there again just for the well (probably 500-600 meters) we would look at setting up a solar array to power the pump. I believe the well is about 200 meters deep. I was wondering if anyone had any adventures with solar power for wells?

I am thinking to account for days with little to no solar power we should have a holding tank as back up.

I grew up with cattle and we had some that would walk right up to you in the pen for a neck scratch. When they had new calves though, always show caution to see how they will react. Not many would but we always had a couple that would charge us no matter how friendly they were. Pigs would not be any different except for the eating you part

Hey Jay, could you explain how big you have the holes in the water container? We have the on the ground kind and our meat chicken always crap on it and we have to clean it every couple days. Your way looks much better.

There is a huge growing permaculture community in Alberta but not too many on here yet, what areas are you two in? I am moving out of Calgary to my parents farm 30 minutes north of the city to get thing jumpstarted again. I am going to live in a 5th wheel trailer for a couple years to make sure things are getting off the ground.

You can still apply to this program but will want to complete the application right away. They are reviewing the applications to be accepted and will announce those selected at the beginning of Feb, for the final phase of the program.
