We are a beautiful private site in SC with old forest, treehouses, and a strong creek. Our goal is to grow happy plants and animals for our food needs and to sustain a healthy earth using eco-friendly methods. We would love to educate and share the permaculture vision and maybe sell some food to keep us going. ALSO-we are refining our great venues sites. Join us at the private (nudist friendly) creekside location or the lakeview treehouse site. Visitor inquiries welcomed. Be happy and free, life does not wait!

Hello All,

Our vision is creating and sharing a self-sustaining farm based community, and in providing healthy food to our local community. There are only two of us and one must work off farm to income fund the farm start up costs. we are in year three.

We have become a little gun-shy of those we need to teach, entertain, or convince of the value of sustainability, to those who are not yet divorced from consumerism and lovingly embracing minimalism. The farm people live mostly from the farm animals and garden, eating in season what we can grow. No chemicals. In place now an orchard, animal pens, small pasture (need to develop more), a shop and machinery, land for community. Our vision is strong but our time and energy is limited. We have put a good start toward a farm that can support us and others, and other infrastructure.

If you are interested in joining us for a visit or a while it will be a journey to set up the community and to make the farm self-sufficient. We need those who are committed, able, and willing to work and share. At this time we do not have a formal community plan although we do have a written vision, a list of goals accomplished and planned, a strong leaning toward an egalitarian system, and a need for help from community pioneers to get it started. We have done our part and have committed to working fewer hours on the farm, and enjoying life a little more. Don't ask how many hours we work now!

"if you come we will help build it". we want to offer you the opportunity to share and to build the community structure that will be your future community. It would be helpful if you have knowledge in building. The farm will work exchange food for help in animal care (sheep, goats, poultry, etc), farm work (fencing, pasture development), establishment of off grid resources such as ram jet pumps for moving water, wood heating, passive solar water heaters, etc. Our end goal is for the farm to support the farm and community with a comfortable amount of work for us all, with no one having to go off site to work, and no one person having to "kill themselves" with the amount of work to be done. A community family to share and celebrate life with.

The land is a former scout camp with over 100 acres in SC and a creek. we have almost a year round season for growing, and beautiful native woods along the creek. The area is rural, and quiet. There is an adjacent large lake for swimming and fishing. It is very hot and humid in the summer and early fall, but rarely freezes in the winter. We are non-judgemental and very open to all so long as they harm none.

Please come prepared to take care of yourself and to build your own community here if you desire to do so. It won't happen unless you want it to!

hoping to plant quite a few orchard trees -some fruit and nut -and anticipate needing quite a lot of comfrey, goumi, j. artichoke, maximillian sunflower and other common guild members.

would love any tips on where i might find quantity at a good price, and maybe even local?? Im in SC.

have checked forums and will try to find some nut trees from Kansas forestry as someone suggested....also needing good reasonable source for non-astringent persimmon.

thanks!

Hello All, we have been trying to inspire a few more registrants for our Permaculture Class to be held soon in SC. The instructor is Patricia Allison of Earthaven Community in NC. She has taught many students in the US, and is well-known regionally.

We need 7 registrants-the Permaculture Fundamentals course fee includes all organic food, free camping, fun evening activities, and both "class room" and hands on portions!

The cost is $750 for 3 weekends of 3 days each starting March 28, 2014 (continuing May and June)-that's less than $100 per day! Besides paying a basic cost for instructor/travel/class materials, this is a non-profit venture. We believe in learning and sharing!

This is held at our farm in SC, where we are striving for a farm based self sufficient community!

register & see more detail at www.khakalakifarm.com DEADLINE FOR PAYMENT MARCH 21, 2014.

Hope to see you there!

Lost touch with you Russ... Hope your well. How's things working out? Still interested in working out here for a while? We'd love to hear from you.

thank you for your responses, great ideas. i do feed non-meat scraps to chickens and goats. no grass yet -hoping to sprig some soon-hay is also pricey. I hear that hear goats do better without pasture regarding worm levels unless off it for long periods, i am in the south so alfalfa all imported here and $$$. Interesting about the fermented grains, do you have any links for more information? not sure if that would be okay for horses but i give them hydrated beet pulp now with an oat/pellet mix at this point and a few alfalfa cubes.

Has anyone had success finding organic soybeans or oats? thanks again...we are just learning all we can...

I am spending a ton of money on feed for my goats, chickens and even horses. Plus the feed is factory prepared so who knows what chemicals were put on it....i would like to be totally organic if i can...so what one (or two) foodstuffs might feed my goats, chickens and eventually pigs and cows (and the darn horses too)??

If i can narrow it to only one or two grains for example i can either find a source not adding chemicals, hire the crop grown, or grow it myself...

there is so much written on the right feed for every animal....i just know $10 plus per bag is going to run my costs way too high...

seems like maybe oats would be good choice for all? corn too rich and not naturally in diet of most cows or goats, is it?

your help appreciated, the simpler the better...thanks, kathryn
