I acquired 3 large clay tiles my farmer, father in law had not used. They are approximately 30 long and 13" in diameter. It is over 1" thick and probably weighs 50 pounds +/-.

This is the photo link.

My question is what type of door can I create to allow input of firewood? Ideally, it would modulate the air intake as well.

The overall site includes these elements:
1. It will be located in a 12 x 20' kitchen in a 100 year old farmhouse.
2. In the past we've used a standard cast iron wood stove
3. The venting has two parts a 5" clay tile cut at an angle at the lower end of the burn box. which will feed into a 6" metal standard black flu pipe.
The opening into the chimney is 8" but I'm only using a 6" vent pipe inserted 12"+ into the chimney. (I'm open for suggestions here)
4. The specific location is approximately 5' wide and up to 4' deep. The rear and sides have ceramic tile over masonry backer board.
5. The whole assembly rests on wooden framing also covered with ceramic tile.

AS the fire box is  set at an angle to facilitate gravity feed of wood, I'm wondering what type of door can I fabricate at the upper end?

We operate a small farm on the east side of Indpls using permaculture principles. We accept WWOOFers or Workaway volunteers or directly message us on Facebook at Hero Farms, or Steward-Owner at Phoenix Urban Farm.
I suspect you want a warmer climate for the winter months but I have a great location in Indianapolis, Indiana and would like to trade housing for your experience. 1.93 acres with the old farmhouse, barn and carriage house in the older suburbs east of the I-465 loop. You could camp next to the new rocket stove... with electricity and rainwater supplied toilets.

My first thought is to use the rocket stove to heat water which will travel thru the floor in a loop.
See the radiator that Bigelow Brooks Farm has on you tube in his greenhouse. or maybe a copper coil around the flue which will circulate under the floor, above the insulation.

My other questions are where are you planning to put the stove? inside or outside?
and why

If you can please put some pics here so we have an idea of how you are doing.

Well this is good news INDIANA PERMIES! I hope I can connect with others from Central Indiana. I have an old farmhouse on 1.93 acres on the east side of Indy. WE call it Phoenix Urban Farm (though its not searchable yet on Google).I am hosting a Rocket Stove Workshop this fall. Hope to build off grid heating, water and energy. Also interested in using the space to build Tiny Houses. check out my activity partner post on Craigslist for pics and developmental thoughts. I'm a little frustrated with the gardening aspect of things as the squirrels at the apples, grapes and corn I planted. There is a huge mess of green beans that need some TLC.

I assume sawn would be smooth compared to hand hewn? I'll post pics when I get them.
I have hopes to create a permaculture center in Indianapolis INDIANA. See my post here 3/2/13 on the roundwood and timber framing forum.

What do you do with an old barn in a city? I"m looking for Permaculture enthusiasts in Indianapolis INDIANA. I have an offer on 1.92 Acres with 5BR, 4BAth home, 60 x 35' Barn, 40 x 26 Carriage house, and 12 x 16.5 Workshop. Of course everything needs work. So I am seeking partners, $mall business owners who may need more space to expand. Long range goal is to host a permaculture design course. Zoned D4 which does not allow for large animals or equipment but does allow 'group home'. What can you do with an old barn with 6.5 foot tall stalls? and a hay loft? A carriage house with an apartment where zoning only allows you one residence? A dug well where the city says you have to use city water and sewer?
If you go to the WWOOFer website look up my ARsenal Ave EcoCenter, or google it for a short video our last WWOOFer made.
We can always use someone who can not only work on the land but is interested in some of the longer range planning needed to bring others onboard.
Other than that I think Indpls is ripe to host a permaculture course so if you or anyone else wants to help sign up some speakers/activists I have a potential new property --1.92 acres with house, barn, carriage house chicken coop etc in the city/suburbs that could use some people power to transform to a life-giving place of activity. good luck in your search.
