I have been really impressed by the depth of your writing. Do you have suggestions for preventing shallow tree roots from invading gaps/clearings where annuals are being cultivated?

What are thoughts on using conifers in hugelbeds? Also wondering about the beds in a cold climate. In one of the podcasts Paul mentions that in cold climates, the beds should run perpendicular to the slope to allow cold air drainage, but this would seem to negate much of the swale-like characteristics of hugel on contour.
