Hi William. The heads of the bolts have 1/4 inch of square shank underneath them, in front of the round rod. They are pressed and glued into the wooden knobs. 2 nuts are set into the vise backplate and holes are drilled into the bench to accomodate the bolts as they are screwed in. Hope that helps

A few pieces of scrap timber, 2 carriage bolts and some screws and glue, and my new workbench has a neat little moxon twin screw vise...
