Hello!

We are currently have several positions open on our farm ranging from land and farm work to care taking and housing keeping.
We are located on the east coast of Maui Hawaii in the rainforest area of Hana. We are a startup cacao and tropical fruit farm on 18 acres and our farm is about 3 miles from the town of Hana, know world wide as one of the most beautiful places on earth. There are lots of beaches and sunshine as well as mountain/rain forest and waterfalls.
East Maui Chocolate also provides services to other farms in our community. We are moving towards sustainable and organic practices and have planted or will be planting: bananas, pineapple, lilikoi passion fruit, mango, lychee, mountain apple, cacao, vanilla, citrus, jackfruit, macadamia nut, veggie and herb garden, mushrooms, soursop, star fruit, cherimoya, avocado, chickens, worms, compost. And More!

Our main goal is cacao production to make chocolate.

Food and lodging is provided. We load up on staple foods and there’s a shared kitchen to cook and store food. We have stoves and showers, passive solar hot water, toilets and composting toilets. We are off grid with solar panels and rainwater catchments. Looking to build chicken or duck coop for eggs.

No experience needed, but we like to host people the are into healthy organic agricultural practices and lifestyle.

Farm work we need help with: planting, clearing invasive trees, pruning, weeding, bush wacking, harvesting fruits and veggies, nursery management, building structures, removing debris, gardening, chipping wood, permaculture design.

Care taking and housekeeping: cooking, preparing meals for 3-5 people, general cleaning with help from everyone else, helping with the kids when they are here (age 8 and 5), light gardening.

The positions can be exclusive just a farm position or just a care taker position, or a combination of the two. Couples and friends are welcome, everyone will need to apply.
25 hours of work per week is typically 8am-1pm monday to friday, but we are flexible with scheduling as projects arise.
We are looking for minimum three month position with possible long term positions available and time progresses. Air fare to Kahalui Maui to be paid by applicant. Transportation from Kahalui to Hana provided by host. Groceries and shopping transportation can be offered as needed. Non Smoking, No hard drinking or Drugs.

Applicants are expected to help with farm chores, planting, weeding, propagation, farm project construction, etc. Aloha!
We have a maximum of 2-4 positions at any time. There’s theres 3-4 people living and working on the farm and sometimes Dave’s (the farm owner) kids stay for a few days at a time.

Im a certified permaculture designer and we are setting this farm up with permaculture intentions as well as education. The farm isn't 100% sustainable, but we'd like to get there and we need help!

Bananas grow well in SoCal yeah and I have grown them with greywater. Other successes I've had are citrus, fig, pomegranate, cherimoya, Zapote, stone fruit.
Avocados are a big problem with greywater, they are very sensitive to salt apparently.

Hi everyone, Im putting together a list of which plants grow well with a greywater system. Greywater usually has a level of salt in the water from soaps used in laundry, shower, or bath sinks, so Im wondering which plants can take a level of salt and which cannot. More specifically, Id like to grow edible perennial plants/trees in Southern California, but any info will be great! What have you had success growing?? Thanks!

Hey Permies!

Im working with Brook Sarson at H2OME in Southern California and for 7 years we have been installing rainwater harvesting and greywater systems for residential houses. We are doing what we can to beat the drought by capturing and reusing water for the landscape. Business is good but we NEED to have more of an impact to beat this drought, create biodiversity, and sequester carbon on a LARGER scale.

What can we do to have more of an impact?

How can we reach more homeowners and like-minded individuals? I don't want to "sell" this concept to people. I want them to understand the benefits and how easy it is to implement.

We run workshops and meet ups at least once a month. The next two are:

Any advice or recommendations are welcome!

Thanks again!

Hey Todd,

I've been looking into similar building codes and opportunities for real estate development in Southern California (specifically San Diego County) where I live. So far I've found that straw bale construction is permitted in San Diego but not rammed earth superadobe. Superadobe is permitted in San Bernadino County however where the Cal earth institute is.

Whats the latest with your developments?

Feel free to PM me or email at gregsreese@gmail.com

Thanks!
