I'm going to be presenting permaculture to a bunch of native tribes in the Pacific Northwest in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone could link to a short video (5 min or less) about a day in the life at a permaculture center. If you know of a short video or photos that show what happens if a permaculture center isn't left to grow by itself for several years, that would also be great!

Thanks!

Thank you Tyler - that's exactly what I was looking for

I'm watching myself get more and more interested in research. What sort of grand-scale research needs to be done in the permaculture community?

Maybe a better question would be: How can I find the big questions people are asking right now?

I'm suggesting to our tribe that we build a geodesic dome for our new greenhouse rather than a standard tunnel greenhouse and they want to see that it has worked for others in this sort of geo-climatic region. Might anyone be able to link me to an example of a successful dome project in SE Alaska, Nova Scotia or the like?

I want to plant several permaculture gardens around the open expenses of Old Harbor, AK a remote rural village on Kodiak Island. One big problem: bears. Any ideas about how to detract bears in a sustainable and humane way?

Today was my first day as the garden director for a small native tribe in Alaska (Old Harbor, near Kodiak). Lot's of rain, not much snow, gusts of high wind, pretty much just rocks, some acidic silt on the ground so soil must be created, and moderate sunlight. We already have a hoop house and are planning to get another. My big question is:

How does one apply permaculture to a hoop house? by the way - a hoop house is essentially a green house that plants on the ground rather than on tables

Smaller questions:
Currently there are rows of raised beds which individuals can use, but they get neglected. I would love to see these raised beds gone and try to go for a more natural system honoring patterns - any ideas?

Would chickens work in a hoop house? how?

Any tips to keep the compost from stinking it up too much?

Should we keep the compost outside or inside during the winter?

I would love links to good sites on hoop house/greenhouse permaculture. SW Alaska permaculture would be good too.

Any ideas are a help! Thanks!

Aloha from a lush wet site in Hawaii!

We want to plant an edible vegetable/herb (not fruit as we are already swimming in fruit:) ) garden and are trying to figure out what exactly to plant. About the spot:

It is along a space that becomes a river when it rains a lot. It will be a consistent river for 2-3 months out the year and runs off and on around the year when there is heavy rainfall. Sometimes where the garden would be floods so plants that can handle a day or a few days of being at least partially submerged would be ideal. It is almost completely shaded.

There are trees at all levels above so we prefer species that will stay lower to the ground.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

VISION
We have so much space to explore with permaculture! I feel like we are on the brink of massive waves of research in the area. I think most permies are focused on getting in the dirt, which is awesome, I love to get my hands dirty too. But I want to really delve into research - figuring out exactly what the best companion planting arrangements are, figuring out which species can survive through climate change, things like that. I want to be a permaculture expert so I can answer the questions we don't even realize we have yet, and then I want to share this sort of knowledge with the world.

OBJECTIVE
It would be amazing to apprentice under one of the best permies around, to do research with them, see how their mind works, see what their visions are. To me, this doesn't mean going on a 2 weeks PDC or floating around WWOOF farms that do some permaculture things. It means starting a mentor-type relationship with someone very experienced who has permaculture at the very front of their mind.

This post is to ask: Does anyone know of a specific site and/or permie like I am describing? I am willing to travel anywhere in the world.

I am pretty disenchanted with the university system and obviously an opponent of ag, but it occurred to me that maybe there would be scholarships or grants to study this sort of thing. I already completed my BS ( in Finance of all things ) so I could maybe even do some sort of post-grad study. I'm not hopeful of this route, but maybe someone reading this has some insight?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated!
