Kansas?! I don't know about Kansas but if Kentucky was in Europe that would be fine with me. The idea of living abroad is tempting. I've lived in South America for a few years and loved it. It really changed my perspective which led me to this lifestyle. I am planning a vacation next year to the UK. Very excited to see where my ancestors came from.

Sorry I messed up US-State names a bit.  This sounds like an very interesting Trip for you.  I wish you to get to know your roots. Some years ago my parents had some visits from australia from far relatives whose parents migrated to australia. They were all very interested to learn about the country their ancesters came from.  I never lived  abroad so far, but made some visits to other countrys. And it ist true, as soon as you leave the tourist-tracks you are likly to learn something new.

I'm an INFP and #9 on the Enneagram if that means anything to anyone.

I guess there is a pretty decent amount of #9 in the permaculturec scene, because they are longing for a different style of life than  #3 capitalism  (me too).
PS: Two eyes to fall in love with. So sad, Kansas is not in Europe ... I whish you to find a fitting partner.

Your Chicken Pictures are already pretty good. My first thought was ...   Ah  that is an example he also want to do.

I think chickens can get pretty familiar with a camera, when they are getting used to it. I visited a Chicken flock some days ago, and first  they reacted more curious than disturbed. But soon they found picking in the grass more interesting than me and my camera.
Try to use lowest ISO possible for better quality. Tripod is for use with long or heavy lenses or in low light, not much of help when shooting  non wildlife chickens.
Chicken are moving in a distint way. They stand still for some time, and then suddenly mofe fast. All those still standing time 1/50s would be fine (with adequat focal lenght).  The moment they move theri Head or pick, yes that would need 1/1000 or so.  The best is to fiqure this out in test sequences. This helbs to developp practice which is the most importend part and works only by doing. With some practice you learn to feel the rhythm of their behavour. I would try burst shooting (3 Shots) per Button activation in case the chicken moves (SD-Card volume is no issue nowadays).
On your images The weather looks overcast or taken in shaddow. More Light is always better in photography, try to work in bright light. Direct sunshine is light for best color shining, albeit you have to take care of shaddow impact. But with modern digital cameras this is not so much of an issue than it was.
Using RAW-File format and post processig is also a quality Step up in the optimization of the denoise  -vs- unsharp ratio. Instead of a 55-200 zoom-lens,  a prime lens, especially a modest macro tele might also be worth a try when headding for best technical quality.
But most importend is practice and usually image quality raises with effort while shooting.

When I translated this quote into my native language (german), the word he used made clear, that ecologically comes first, and economical is just to be enough to live from. None the less an importend aspect.
This is a difference to the gneral approach of an enterprise primary goal to make profit ant that as much as possible. And to the organic-Approach to make classical farmig 'a bit more ecological'.

My engagement in permaculture started, when I was looking for alternatives, after I realized that current economy-sytem is directly designed against the producers. It works extremly well to transfer the benefits of labour to merchants and bankers, but not for the producers. I'm an studied engineer. I realized that no matter how much we improve pruduction efficiency, next season the demandments of "marked", customers and shareholders will raised even more, so that the rat race continues.

The point which decides to be economical sustainible is not primarily in optimising production, this is only secondary.
How you can sell your products - marketing is the key in this respect.
In the last capter of the Permaculture-Handbook social permaculture this topic is adressed, and these chapters should be read with care.

Selling direct to the customer is a crucial point. To differenciate from competition also. Selling a premium product and getting a premium price is the art to make money, nomather of the type ofproduct. If you want to turn a hobby farm into a comercial farm this are topics getting much more crucial than further optimising the way you produce (altough not irrelevant). I remember a Video (was on Geoff Lawton website) of a urban lot, where he started selling his "weeds" to hip-restaurants for an increddible price. This makes more of a difference to economich sucess  than production considerations.

So, if you live in a warm climate:

LED light: 10
incandescent light:  3

If you live in a cold climate:

incandescent light used intelligently:  10
incandescent light:  5
LED light: 1

Lot of people like me live in a temperate climate. So I rate for a temperate climate

incandescent light and LED used intelligently:  10
incandescent light used intelligently:  8
LED light used intelligently: 8
incandescent light:  5
LED light: 5

At the moment  I use a Mix of LED CFL, and incandesend light.
CFL will be replaced when lifespan is over, to justify toxicity which is already done.

What is  that I'd  like to have a complementary 46V DC-Net in my house, driven from solar and a Array of 12V Batterys for all those electronic helper to replace
al this small power supply units comming along with most of modern devices.

12V would have a bit too much energy loss due to high current in an house environment. But 46V would be fine in Family home size and without life danger.

Damian Jones wrote:Hi all,

I figure purchasing a tractor, cutter, rake and baler would be horribly expensive (let me know if I'm wrong on this).  So I'm looking for alternative.  Scything is out of the question as we are middle aged and the though of spending a week of cutting, raking and baling by hand makes me faint.

Opinions welcomed.

Thanks,
Onyx.
