Interesting concept. I would love to see someone expand on this idea. The biggest issue with barrels I see humidity build up inside then rusting from the inside out and thermal expansion of the filler. Once these issues are resolved it would be a great building medium.

What are you planting near these trees?

What do you guys think about planting a tree of some type to help break up the clay? I thought about digging a deep hole and backfilling it with good dirt and letting the tree do the work.

Covering is a possibly, I do have access to leaves. I thought about drilling holes with an 6" auger and packing them with organic matter(Leaves, straw, wood chips, etc). The clay is so densely packed that when you drill a hole and fill it with water it takes 2-3 hours to soak though. Maybe in a few years it could be worked in.

I live in an area that has hard pack clay and it stays hot and dry, lately and in the summer. I would like to break up this clay to plant various things. Does anyone have any tips on breaking this up without a tractor or tiller? I was wondering if there are any type of plants that thrive in these hot, dry conditions and could break up the hard clay?

Any thoughts on leguminous trees to help fruit orchards. I was looking for a LT that woulf be a good fit for breaking up hard clay soil.

I want to plant a dwarf Christmas tree or bush for my son in the front yard. I was looking for some direction or suggestions as what type and where to buy. I would like a small tree 6' max height, a tree that stays pretty and green year round(wife's request), one that stands up to adding and removing lights each year, and a tree that supports local wildlife. If I am missing anything, feel free to let me know. Thanks.

I know about earthship building but I was told the tires were filled with concrete rather than earth. Does that sound right?

Many, many moons ago, a life far away, I was in small town near Cripple Creek, Colorado and visiting a house built into the side of a hill. I was told it was built with old tires with concrete poured in them. I think this is correct? Does anyone know about this type of construction? Enlight me... and if you know about the house I speak of...do tell.
