Homestead has a working sawmill, and makes cabin logs, timbers, lumber and firewood from local beetle-killed spruce. Help is needed with logging and making firewood in the winter; organic gardening, sawmilling, and building in the summer; year round repairs and maintenance. No experience is necessary. Jim is a log home builder and teacher of many years.
Homestead was founded by Jim's parents in 1943. It is 60 miles from town and off the electric grid. We have 43 acres along a braided-stream swift water river. We offer a private, dry, non-electric, log cabin for helpers, fully furnished, with a wood stove for heating, propane cook stove and lights, outhouse. Water, showers, washer/dryer and internet service are available in hosts' home. We use a windmill and generators to charge batteries, with an inverter, for our electrical system. Family style meals are available in our home, or you may prepare your own food, as you prefer.
A well-behaved dog is welcome. Length of stay is open-ended. We are LGBTQ friendly.
