I'm one of those people who truly enjoys both the Texas heat (only time my air conditioner was on was when friends from up north visited) and the stunning beauty of winter up here. I didn't understand why people lived here either, until the first time I saw Lake Superior, and began to learn about the abundance of food like manoomin (wild rice), etc. I adapted pretty quickly to the cold, but the U.P. is a lot warmer than where I started when I first moved north. I want to get this housing project I have been working on launched, and train someone else to run it, so I can travel and enjoy the best of both worlds. Interestingly enough, I refer to the housing project I've been working on as a 'living laboratory'.

I'm currently on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's beautiful, very close to Lake Superior. I haven't totally committed to buying the place yet, but I've been leaning towards it, and it's got a lot of strong advantages compared to other possibilities. Like a lot of people, I suppose, I started learning with growing food and I'm getting pretty good at that and the short growing season here is one of the few downsides.

Hi John! You sound like a fascinating person! We seem to have a lot in common: I was born in Kansas, and used to live in Dallas. I've served many roles, including foster parent, to adolescents and young adults affected by disability, and one of my major interests is developing more and better housing options for those who need to try to get by on SSI/SSDI. I'm not highly skilled (yet) at many of the tasks related to getting off grid or as close to it as possible, but think I may have found the perfect spot and have the passion for nature, and energy/drive to be self-sufficient you're seeking, if you'd like to chat! TY!

Hey all! I am also in Michigan, on the U.P. Renting now, but have similar goals to both Brie and Marc, so wanted to introduce myself and find out if Marc is still looking because there is a possibility of splitting up and/or sharing the acreage I am on, and I too am trying to sell a house elsewhere so I can buy here, hopefully!

Brie- I love and appreciate your plans and intentions, mine are similar but I need more than a room for myself and my pets but I hope you found someone who is compatible!

I'm a pretty long way from others interested in permaculture in MI that I have found so far, but still would love to network and collaborate, help out if and where able to support people's efforts!
