After losing a 150+ Oak 2 years ago, our front garden needs some changes to adapt to the sun exposure. Additionally, soil amendments, mulch, and plants have raised the garden over the years. In some areas, the ground is lower near the house. I think our remaining tree is buried and concerned it needs to be uncovered.

I’m working on removing soil/mulch and have corrected the grade on 1/3 of area. As I moved to the next area, I’m feeling overwhelmed at the amount of soil and mulch that will need to be removed (8-10 “ )in order to pull it away from the house  (and match the grade of completed area) and now I’m second-guessing myself.

I’m sure I’ve made mistakes- I’m here trying to find solutions.

Can I create a valley to draw water away from house and not remove as much soil/mulch? Other ideas?
Is tree ok?

Can I provide other details so this is understandable?
Hi Phil,
I'm a photographer and storyteller (via digital media).  Considering schedules and logistics, I'd be interested in documenting some of the process.  I'd like to see how it's done, pick up a few lessons along the way.
