SHADE OR SHADECLOTH
keeping the plant leaves below 86 degrees is important
Above that they stop doing photosynthesis and sending sugars into the soil, thus soil life weakens adn the process of  building soil stops.

"When you have healthy plants they deliver more sugar and energy than you can ever hope to match with compost or any other applications.
When you increase the PS from 20 to 60% you triple the sugar production every day.  Most gets sent out into root exudates, and carbohydrates.  15,000 lbs transferred from corn per acre.
Therefore the highest priority is to grow really healthy plants."  JOHN KEMPF

2 PLANT MANY DIVERSE PLANTS
see the work of Dr. Christine Jones on TheirTube.
having a cover crop of 8+ varieties well chosen vastly improves plant performance during drought and also soil building.

3 USING SOIL INNOCULANTS
healthy plants create healthy soils far more than the other way around.  It's a chicken and egg question.

4 FOLIAR SPRAYS are the most potent way to increase plant health.  Strong plants with shiny  green leaves handle heat stress much better.

5 WEAK PLANTS attract bugs and disease from miles around.
Bugs and disease are a symptom of weak plants. Foliars are the most powerful way to fix this.

6 See LANDRACE GARDENING, a master key.  They teach the power of saving seeds that survive drought for example, and the next generation will be far far more able to hand drought and be acclimated to your area's conditions and your desires.

In my research I have come across glowing reports on the virtues of  Khaki Campbell ducks.
- 300+ eggs a year make them the most prolific layer of all fowl
- quiet
- don't require so much water as other breeds, they are more of a land duck.
-- not so messy as other ducks
-very hardy

Perhaps most practical idea is to use used motor oil combined with at least 25% deisel gas.
THis has been used by farmers for a century to coat fence posts, and they last many decades.
Some may fuss about some supposed toxins.  The only one I would consider would be from the metals from the motor in the old oil, but I doubt that is anything to worry about on the edge of a garden.
One could use plastic to seal off that wood from the soil if desired.

See anything by Jonathan Lungren / insects on Youtube.

He has an insect research facility and talks about countering problematic insects with vastly more diversity.

You can have areas where insects can gather safe from birds, etc.

Growing a very wide diversity of plants is part of this. See Dr. Christine Jones who has done lots of research in the importance of a widely diversified cover crop program, as opposed to just a few species.  Vastly more potent in remaking soil quickly.

Hi Fun-guys

WHat you are looking for is in Korean Natural Farming, they came up with rice under a tree system.

THey don't just put the rice into the field, they take the innoculated rice and put it in water with a sugar source to multiply the fungi mightily, then feed plants and soil.

They may saturate the soil for a month before planting.

The inventor of KNF has a son who took his ideas to another level.

He grows microbes from leaf mold in water with potato as the preferred food source.

Get the book JADAM ORGANIC FARMING

also the web site EN.JADAM.KR has videos etc.
