I have personally been involved with two consented masonry heaters in Queenstown designed and led by Albie from 'Maine Wood Heat', an amazing craftsman and designer.
They would be a very good place to start. Also 'Tulikivi Oi' make beautiful soapstone units that are worth checking out, I believe they have some units installed in NZ. I hope this helps
