Russell, did you get an answer to your question about RMH or Masonary heaters in NZ? I’m interested in installing one in my new strawbale home I’m designing.

Hi Kate

Ed Main here from Auckland

A story to tell then a suggestions to make on a possible way forward for RMH's in New Zealand

During lockdown 1 in 2020 stuck at home, I stumbled upon the you tube videos of RMH's.
I was seriously blown away by the practical simplicity of the concept so I dug around for
more info with the idea of building a prototype

This link is for an Auckland company that sells fire resistant bricks
https://www.thermalsolutionz.co.nz/

My suggestions:
1) You may be best to build a prototype yourself... OUTSIDE... perhaps so it can become
   a bbq area
2) Then approach a  local council building inspector to demonstrate the concept
This permies youtube video shows the differences in stove types

My concern is this:
Building inspectors and councils may balk at RMH's because it is DIY and not a
recognizable brand

Kind regards

Hi Guys

I have personally been involved with two consented masonry heaters in Queenstown designed and led by Albie from  'Maine Wood Heat', an amazing craftsman and designer.

They would be a very good place to start. Also 'Tulikivi Oi' make beautiful soapstone units that are worth checking out,  I believe they have some units installed in NZ.  I hope this helps

Warm regards
Sean

My problem with building RMH is that we don't really need heat in Northland, i'd love the idea of having a boil down station under a covered area for processing out our own sugarcane but right now i don't think our laws favour that sorta thing. Even to put in a greenhouse heater for our tropical plants i had to jump through hoops to get it approved.

Unfortunately for me i think i have too many nosy council people coming and going while we are retrofitting this place to warrant experimenting.

What i would really like is something like this :

Rocket Mass Heater, hot water attached runs down to milking shed
3 bay boiling station for stuff that needs hours and hours of boiling that can be done in stock pots outdoors

I have the Rocket Ovens bundle here on permies but because I'm not committed enough to doing more research, i haven't had time to sit down and actually see if what i would like to build is even possible.

but right now i don't even know if we are staying here long term given the floods keep making themselves known and i am nervous about staying here, we need to relocate to a property up a hill first before i look at permanent structures that are 'experimental'. It would definitely suit my mad scientist vibe to make licorice syrups and the likes !

The council spent most of its time fussing over the orientation of the greenhouse and where it was sited because of noise pollution from the extractor fans. We are 5-10 minutes outside of Kaitaia city, and no one here really cares about fan noise when there are roosters around; but the council gets hung up on fan noise ?
