I have just made a lot of biochar with the pit method. It all started with digging out a large bush and its roots. And finally burning what I could not cut out. Leaving me a "pit". I have read over the years about biochar but decided it was to much work..
But looking at the hole in the ground decided to give it a try. It worked so well. I made a second pit. A friend who heats with wood said I could have some of his wood as the city has been giving him green ash trees that they had to remove.
I ended up burning over 2 cords of wood and old lumber.
If you have been puting off trying to make char give the pit method a try.⁰
