Biography
The dream - a smallholding regeneratively developed into a food forest and sanctuary, with natural buildings and habitat for the wild ones, as well as a few domestic critters. The current state of affairs - we (me, single woman, 50, and my faithful feline companion, Lily B., 11) are in Western Washington, looking for farms, homesteads, educations centers, etc. on which to live, learn, and contribute while I save for the dream. Really happy to have found this community - cheers, all!

Wooowie, that is a lot going on - thanks for sharing; I'm inspired by what you've accomplished! Sorry to hear about the greenhouse chomper; that must be one happy groundhog...  All just beautiful. Looking forward to seeing the mushroom harvest!

Hello All, I am looking for a peaceful, beautiful place among the redwoods in rural Southern Oregon or Northern California to call home, where I can live simply in a sole dwelling space and grow organic food and herbs for medicine. I would love to live and work on a regenerative homestead that is holistically and freedom oriented, that prioritizes a clean, safe, and organized environment, and is cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco free.

Ideally, I would like to offer my skills in exchange for living in a stand alone structure like a tiny house, yurt, or cob house where there is the possibility of long term integration and residency. I am capable, responsible, committed, and I genuinely care about the land on which I live and the plants, animals, and humans with whom I share it. I am experienced with work trade caring for land, gardens, and animals, and I have the desire and ability to learn new skills. I am open to a community where there is a well established system in place, a smaller homestead with a few folks or a family, or a caretaker opportunity for someone who travels and needs hands and eyes on the land while away.

My background is in craft, child care, and postpartum education and support, and my interests are in fiber crafts - sewing and knitting, gardening, holistic medicine, and natural building. I bring an awareness of the overall flow of a homestead, an attention to detail, an ability to vision and generate ideas, and the skills of indoor and outdoor transformation - weed clearing, decluttering, and creating sustainable systems of organization. References available. Please feel free to direct message me to see if we may be a good fit. Cheers!

Hi Margaret,

I hope you find some good help, soon. I am too far away to come help, but I have seen your post a few times and I thought I would ask you if you have tried posting on the 'homesteads looking for helpers/helpers looking for homesteads' Facebook page? Folks seem to get a variety of responses there, and I think more people might see it there. Forgive me if you have already tried this avenue. I wish you and your husband the best in finding a great fit.

Hey All,

I'm currently in Snohomish County and would love to meet up if any kind of group meet happens, to talk about all things sustainable and alternative, and meet some like-minded folks. Cheers!

I would love to chat with you. I don't see a way to message you, but I will respond to your craigslist ad, as well, and leave you my email address, here. My name is Susanna, and my email address is: realmofcats@protonmail.com (I only have one cat ) I am not part of a couple, but I get the sense that I could be a good fit, if you are open to a single person, from reading both of your ads. Happy to go into more detail via a more direct form of communication. Looking forward to connecting with you!

Hello Northwestern, inland folks - I'm looking for a stand alone rental, but not just a rental: what I'd really love is to be part of some kind of community, even if that's just a couple other people who would like to share their land and have someone there to share gardening, building, animal care, etc. It could be a partial work/trade situation, or a reasonably priced rental that comes with opportunities to participate in gardening and animal care, etc. Do you need an extra pair of hands to help build a sauna or a natural building, help with land tending, or do you want to learn to sew all the things? Or, would you like another person around to take care of things when you're out of town? I love working on projects that involve natural materials, nature, and self-sufficiency, as well as the idea of becoming more sovereign - in a positive, let's all evolve and build new skills kind of way, as opposed to a let's disconnect and survive while the world self-combusts kind of way. Generally positive and communicative, I enjoy a balance of spending quiet time with my sweet kitty, Lily, and being social/working on community projects, and potentially working toward a bigger vision - whether it's land stewardship, building, planting new varieties of edibles, or creating sanctuary to share with the wider community. I'm mature, responsible, and stable; awake, substance-free, and regenerative food focused and ask the same. My life is built around health, freedom, creativity, and aspiring sovereignty. If this aligns with your vision, and you have some extra space and a desire for someone to join you, please let me know!
Cheers, Susanna

We live on an ancient homestead and are seeking a "homestead helper." This could include the use of a recently rebuilt 130 year-old log cabin. We grow much of our own food, have chickens and dogs. We are in a stunning valley in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. Most of our neighbors have either two wings or four legs. Would love to talk to you about this opportunity. Thanks, Dave and Nancy

Hi Dave, I'm intrigued - I'll send you a moosage!

Here’s the photo, with a rough approximation of where the HUGE front pockets are. You’ll immediately see why adjusting at the side seam is problematic. There’s additional pockets at the back, and most of them involve the side seams as well. Unpicking the pockets might work…that’s a good suggestion. Lots of work, but worth it to keep the pockets.

I think this denim is too thick to leave the darts as just a big tuck; the fold would be uncomfortable while I’m working. May need to open them, trim the excess, and then finish the raw edges to keep them from fraying (which would also be uncomfortable).

Now that you see the photo, let me know if you’ve other good thoughts!

Ah yeah, I see what you mean about the side seams. I think your fish eye darts idea is great - and yeah, i would definitely trim them once sewn and top stitch down the seam allowances. You could fold them over or pink shear them, beforehand, so they would be soft on the skin. It does seem worth unpicking the top of the front pockets, right? They look incredibly handy. Then you can also take in the waistband to fit the taken in front - that is if it's a separate piece sewn over the top - if not, haha, yeah, a bulky dart indeed. They are a nice pair of overalls - that fabric looks like the perfect balance between comfortable and sturdy. Hope you show us all your finished alteration!

Shawn Foster wrote:How do I take them in without sacrificing pockets? I was thinking something like long fisheye darts down either side of the front and back, if I can avoid catching the front pockets, but that’s going to be a bit of a challenge with the thick fabric. Anyone got other ideas?

A good pair of well-fitting overalls is a treasure worth keeping updated for sure. I have an image of them in my mind, along with an image of you at the grocery store . Mind posting a photo of the overalls? I'm thinking side seams, but I'm guessing there is a reason you aren't starting there. A photo of the garment would help me visualize the options better.

If you went with fish eye darts, could the front pockets be unpicked from the waistband and sewn back in to the narrowed waistband after the fisheyes were taken in?
