Historically, chestnuts were among the most popular Christmas and New Years snacks. In honor of that tradition, and with hopes of an abundant 2026 for all of you good folks, we are running a 10% off sale on all our chestnut options, including our 10-pack deals! Just use the code 2026 at checkout! Though the days of forests filled with native American Chestnut trees are over (for now), we can replace the void in the ecosystem with all other species of chestnut. We grow Chinese, Japanese and hybrid types for a wide range of genetics. Trees are grown in air-prune beds filled with rich compost made by our chickens and mulched with leaves and wood chips that make for a fibrous root system with good mycelium growth. Trees are around 2 feet tall and ready to establish themselves in your landscape! Thanks and happy growing in 2026 and beyond! www.folkrockfarm.com

I catch a lot of flak from some people, but I adore Autumn Olive! The smell of the landscape when in flower, the bees in a frenzy in the blooms, the astounding yields of highly nutritious and delicious berries, the fact it can grow in almost all extremes of drought, poor soil, heat, cold, and it enriches the land it is in, setting the stage for later succession tree species.......I could go on and on about AO!

Wood chips can absolutely be free as well. Just call as many tree services as you can asking for chips, an especially if you hear them out and about or see them. Just go up to them and ask and more often than not they are happy to drop the whole truckload off for free. It is usually more convenient for them if they are in the area, they can drop off and get back to work or end the shift rather than driving to the dump. I haven't bought wood chips in years. Good luck! Either way both methods are amazing. You can even make an entire hugel mound with wood chips rather than just logs, or preferably a combination of both!

My climate isn't anything like yours, but just going on intuition and what I've researched over the years I would say sinking the beds down might be the way to go. Maybe even digging on the spot and filling it with organic matter like a Hugelkultur mound. That would store more water and gradually decompose into wonderful compost. Good luck with whatever route you choose!

Thanks! This is our fourth year we've done online sales with shipping, though we have been propagating plants for our own food forest and going to markets with them for about 12 years. Most of our plants are from our own seeds and cuttings that we've established through the years. We're really keen on seeking out great genetics in these unique plants. Glad to see more folks getting into these fruits and nuts as well! The world really is a better place when we fill it with bounty! It sounds like you're a northeastern man yourself? Whereabouts?
