Hey folks, so I went way overboard planting Japanese Chestnut seed last year haha, I suppose my eyes were bigger than my sales! So if any fine folks out there are looking for Japanese Chestnut trees I will be offering them at a 20% discount if you use the code CHESTNUT at checkout through my nursery website www.folkrockfarm.com. This Promo lasts through March, which is our last month for Spring 2025 orders. We will open back up for ordering in September 2025 for Fall shipping! Thanks and I hope everybody has an awesome growing season!

As we all wait for the spring thaw, I like to hunker down with a cup of coffee and write about the plants and trees that I interact with in my food forest. Yes, we are all a bit obsessed with this whole "gardening" thing, aren't we?!? Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Pawpaw Paradise: The Banana of the North

Hey folks! I always get cabin fever in the winter waiting for the world to green up again. To help stay (relatively) sane I like to write articles about my favorite plants. Here's one I did awhile back about Hazelnuts. Hope you enjoy and Happy Growing in 2025! FolkRockFarm

Black Raspberries and Autumn Olive. Some folks find Autumn Olive too tart and astringent, but the ones growing around our land are so plump and fruity! Me and my chickens feast!

While not centered solely on pigs, Joel Salatins books go into all livestock care, including pigs. He describes how he uses them in his composting system in "You Can Farm"and "Folks, This Ain't Normal", and also has a book titled "The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs" although I haven't read that one yet. A lot of the writing is more about the abomination of the factory farming model and what we can do to move past that.

Just grew Purple Tops for the first time this past season. They seemed to size up better than rutabagas in the same bed, and they are storing excellently! For chicken feed I've found that if I smash them then the chickens go to town on them. They seem to have more trouble getting into them whole, but I just stomp on them until they smash open haha and the chickens love it! Pigs are also quite fond of them. I don't raise pigs at home, but the farm I work on does and I'm the main care taker.
