This badge bit (BB) is part of the
PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the iron badge in
textiles.
In this project, you will make a rug starting with raw fiber grown/raised by you. You must show a good choice of materials and methods that are appropriate for the goal.
Minimum requirements:
- Plant the seed: either animal feed seed or a fiber seed like cotton or
flax
- Harvest the plant or animal material that came from those seeds
- Process that material into yarn and fabric
- Must start with raw fiber plant or animal fiber (no fur, hide, or skin)
- Construction technique must be appropriate for the project
- Must be at least 24 square feet total
- You choose the dimensions and up to three rugs are acceptable
To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (< 4 min):
- The seeds you are planting
- The plants growing or animals eating the plants
- Harvesting the plant or animal material
- Processing the material into yarn/thread
- Making the yarn/thread
- Making the fabric
- Making the towels and washcloth
- Your completed towels and dishcloths (perhaps with a tape measure)
The following resources will give you some ideas and how-tos. Just remember that to meet the requirements of this BB, all materials used in your rug must be natural plant fiber.
